Yew Ming gets the ball rolling

Davis CupMALAYSIA started its campaign on a bright note as former national champion Si Yew Ming defeated Kuwait’s Ahmad Rabeeca Muhammad 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 in the curtain raiser of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Tie Group II Asia/Oceania Zone 2009 at the National Tennis Center in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.

Yew Ming, who hails from Ipoh, was given a good run in the second set but managed a strong comeback to nail all three sets in a match that lasted two hours and five minutes.

National coach S.Selvarajoo, however, believed Yew Ming could have performed better against his Kuwaiti opponent.

“Yew Ming was trailing in the second set but managed to turn the tables around. I’m happy the national side obtained a good start,” said Selvarajoo.

“I must admit that Yew Ming could have played better. Well let’s leave the past behind and prepare for the coming matches.”

Yew Ming is set to partner seasoned player V.Selvam in the doubles event tomorrow (Saturday, 5pm).

In the second singles event of the day, host player Razlan Rawi after 3 hours and 10mins battle lost 1-6, 6-2, 4-6 and 4-6 against Kuwait’s top player Muhammed Ghareeb.

The Davis Cup event is hosted by the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (LTAM).
